Fishing on St. Croix

Reel in a Caribbean catch while chartering the famous waters of the Virgin Islands

Wahoo, marlin, mahi mahi, tuna and sailfish are popular finds for any fisherman's excursion in paradise

If there is one thing that the Virgin Islands are known for, it's water and the aquatic residents that call it home. As you might imagine, fishing is very popular and remains one of the leading reasons that some visit the beautiful island of St. Croix. In fact, Carribean catches have even been known to break several world records.

Among the catches that one can anticipate from a day at sea include wahoo, yellow fin, mahi mahi, marlin, tuna and sailfish. The type of fish that you catch will greatly depend on the time of year that you visit St. Croix as certain types are more common during certain months. For instance, yellow fin and wahoo are more common during the fall and winter months whereas mahi mahi and marlin are more common during the first part of the year and continue to be plentiful through spring and summer.

Wherever you find fish, you are sure to find charters and St. Croix is no different. Chartered fishing trips allow you to enjoy the Carribean waters with the expertise of local fishermen who know the area and how to maximize your chances of reeling in a big catch. When you employ the use of a fishing charter, the crew members are just as helpful as you want them to be. In other words, they can either pitch in or step back and let you enjoy the thrill of fishing the calm waters of St. Croix.

Because fishing is a popular water activity in the U.S. Virgin Islands, the schedule of charter companies often fills up quickly. This means that you will probably want to make your reservations as early as possible and be sure to know exactly how many people will be accompanying you on the trip. If you have children, check with the charter company about any possible age restrictions. In most cases, children are welcome to participate and will likely enjoy a close look at the underwater world of the Carribean sea.
